What does showing it in the Gallery do?
The difference between listed in the Gallery and reachable by its link.
It lets people find your work in the Gallery. With it off, your published work is still reachable by its link — it is simply not listed.
It cannot be turned on before the first publish, since there would be nothing to show. Turning it off later takes it out of the Gallery; people who already saved it keep what they saved.
