Maya reached her hotel at ten past twelve. Her flight had arrived on time, and the train into the city had been easy to find. Now she had almost two hours before an important job interview. She planned to change, have a quick lunch, and read through her notes.
She placed her black on the bed and opened it. A blue jacket lay on top. Underneath were a pair of large shoes and a book about sailing.
Maya stared at them. She owned none of these things.
At the airport, she had collected her while answering a message from her sister. Several black cases on the belt had looked . She had picked one up without checking it properly. She did not her mistake until she saw the unfamiliar clothes.
She checked the handle. There was a plastic holder, but the name inside it was missing. Her own interview clothes were gone. At least her phone, wallet, and documents were in the small bag she had carried onto the plane.
She closed the case and sat down. These were someone else’s . Somewhere in the city, that person might be looking at hers.

A Clue in the Pocket
Maya searched online for the airline’s baggage service. A message warned that replies could take several hours. She could report the mistake, but she needed a faster way to solve it.
There was a small pocket on the outside of the case. A folded piece of paper was sticking out. Perhaps it was a clue.
It was a receipt for coffee at the airport that morning. Beneath it, Maya found a business card. The name was Daniel Reed, and there was a mobile number.
She decided to contact him. A man answered after two rings.
“This may sound strange,” she began, “but I think I have your suitcase.”
“A black one with a blue jacket inside?”
“Yes!”
“Then you must be the owner of a case full of women’s clothes. I have it right here. I was about to call the airline.”
Maya described her case and the clothes inside it. Daniel confirmed the details. He was at the railway station, waiting for a train home.
“Could we arrange to exchange them at my hotel?” she asked. “I have an important meeting this afternoon.”
Daniel checked the address. “I can be there by one.”

Running Out of Time
At five to one, Maya was waiting in the hotel lobby. She had already checked the route to the company’s office. It normally took twenty minutes by taxi. If Daniel arrived soon, she would still have time to change.
Her phone rang.
“I’m sorry,” Daniel said. “There’s been a delay. The traffic is barely moving. The driver thinks we need another twenty-five minutes.”
Maya looked at the clock. Suddenly, everything felt urgent. She imagined arriving late, in her travel clothes, with no time to think. For a moment, she wanted to blame Daniel, although none of this was his fault.
Instead, she called the company.
“Could I explain what has happened?” she asked the receptionist.
She described the suitcase mistake and said she might be a few minutes late. The receptionist checked with the manager. They could begin at quarter past two instead.
Maya thanked her and took a slow breath.
At twenty past one, Daniel hurried through the hotel entrance with her case. Maya felt relieved as soon as she saw it.
“I’m grateful you came all this way,” she told him.
“I needed mine back too,” he said, smiling. “We both made the same mistake.”

The Interview
Upstairs, Maya quickly checked her suitcase. Everything was there. She changed, brushed her hair, and read her notes while eating a banana from her bag. By twenty to two, she was in a taxi.
She reached the office at seven minutes past two, eight minutes before her new appointment time. The receptionist offered her some water. Maya accepted it and put her phone away.
When the manager came to meet her, Maya felt more confident than she had expected.
“Thank you for changing the time of the interview,” she said. “I really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you.”
The manager nodded. “Thank you for keeping us informed.”
During their conversation, Maya described her experience helping customers at a busy travel company. She explained how she listened to problems, checked the facts, and found practical answers. This morning, she had needed those same skills herself.
She wanted to make a good impression, but she no longer felt she had to appear perfect. When she did not understand one question, she simply asked the manager to explain it again.
Later, back at the hotel, she attached a bright green ribbon to her suitcase. She did not know whether she would get the job. But next time she collected her luggage, she would certainly look twice.
