Nora Saleh was putting on her coat when her phone made a sound. It was a quarter to eight on Monday, and she was due at her new job at nine. She had checked the bus route, packed a notebook, and chosen her clothes the night before.
The was from Amir, the person who had organised her first day.
“Good morning, Nora. Unfortunately, we need to today’s training. Some equipment is not ready. Please stay at home this morning. I will send a new start date shortly.”
Nora read it twice. Being a new was already stressful enough without an change. Had something gone wrong with her job?
She took off her coat but left it over a chair. Then she opened the welcome email from the previous week. Its were clear: arrive at the main office at nine and ask for the marketing team.
The new mentioned equipment. What equipment? She was going to help write product descriptions, not operate machines.
She felt . Perhaps the whole company had a training day, or perhaps she had missed an earlier email. Staying at home would be easy. But if the was wrong, she would miss her first morning.

Checking the Details
Nora put the two messages beside each other on her laptop. The dates matched, and both were addressed to “Nora”. However, one detail in the second message seemed important: its subject line said “Warehouse training”.
She checked the job offer again. Her role was in the marketing department, at the office across town. The warehouse was at a different address.
At eight fifteen, she called the number in her original welcome email. A receptionist answered.
“I start work with you today,” Nora explained. “I have received two different sets of information. Could someone confirm whether I should come in?”
The receptionist checked the list of new starters.
“I have Nora Saleh here for marketing at nine. Amir is responsible for the arrangements. He will be here in a few minutes.”
“Could you ask him to contact me, please?”
Nora left her number and kept her coat nearby. She did not want to accuse anyone of making a mistake. There might be a simple misunderstanding.
While she waited, she wrote down three questions: Was her start date still today? Which building should she go to? Who would meet her?
Having clear questions made the problem feel smaller. Now she knew what she needed to find out.

The Other Employee
At half past eight, Amir called.
“I need to apologise,” he said. “We have two people joining us with similar names: Nora Saleh and Nora Salim. I selected the wrong person when I sent the training update.”
Nora let out a breath. “So I should still come to the marketing office?”
“Yes. And the other Nora has received your office instructions. She called me a few minutes ago because she expected to work at the warehouse.”
The mistake finally made sense. It had affected a new colleague as well as Nora.
Amir asked her to forward the message so he could check exactly what she had received. He would then correct both sets of information and send each person a fresh email with their full name, role, and location.
“Do I still have time to catch my usual bus?” Nora asked.
“Your manager knows what happened. Come when you can. We can arrange the welcome meeting for nine fifteen.”
The new email arrived while they were still speaking. Nora checked her full name and the address before thanking him.
This time, she put her coat on and left. On the bus, she received one more update: Nora Salim now had the right instructions too.

A Different First Day
Nora reached reception at five past nine. Amir was waiting beside the desk.
“I think we have spoken enough by phone for one morning,” he said with a smile. “Let me introduce you to your team in person.”
Her manager, Elena, showed her the office and explained the plan for the day. Nora felt relieved to see that nobody seemed annoyed with her. By the time they sat down together, she was ready to begin.
Her first task was to compare a product page with information from a supplier. She noticed that two model numbers were almost the same, although the products had different sizes.
“Should I check which one this page is about?” she asked.
“Definitely,” Elena said. “Our customers need reliable information. Ask whenever something does not match.”
Nora felt more confident. The questions she had worried about asking that morning were exactly the kind she needed to ask at work.
At lunchtime, she received an email from Nora Salim, with Amir copied in.
“Thanks for helping get our first days sorted out. Perhaps we should meet when my training starts tomorrow.”
Nora replied with a friendly yes. She had expected to meet new colleagues that day. She had not expected one of them to share her first name and receive her welcome email.
